Chin Implants FAQs

The patient goes under anesthesia while an incision is made in either one of two places: in the mouth or where the bottom lip meets the chin. The surgeon gently stretches the tissue and creates a pocket to insert the implant. The implant feels like natural tissue and can be molded into a variety of sizes and shapes.

Those with weak or receding chins and a normal dental bite respond best to the procedure. Candidates should be in good health, have no current diseases or bone disorders.

Yes. Chin Implantation has proven to be a safe, low-risk cosmetic procedure. As with any surgery, a risk of infection is possible.

Possible side effects include swelling, bruising, redness, blood clots, implant displacement and extended numbness of the lips.

Immediately following surgery, patients can expect numbness and swelling. Facial expressions may be hard to make for a few days.

The results are permanent.

Patients can resume regular activities one to two weeks after surgery. Strenuous activities should be avoided until three weeks after surgery.

Patients will enjoy a contoured jaw line that balances other facial features.

Results are immediate; however, there will be swelling for a few weeks following the procedure.

Those who take blood-thinning and anti-inflammatory drugs should avoid the procedure because they increase bleeding.

An alternative to the implant is the reconstruction of the chin bone.

Only one surgery is needed for full results. Some patients may need a follow-up procedure if complications arise.

The patient’s individual surgeon will provide specific instructions prior to surgery. There will be guidelines on eating, drinking, smoking and medications to take and avoid. Patients should make arrangements for someone to drive them home after the surgery.

Patients will be prescribed pain medication to minimize any discomfort. Swelling will last five to seven days and patients should sleep on two pillows to reduce swelling. A support brace should be worn at night to allow tissues and the implant to heal properly.
